Citigroup is under renewed scrutiny after a former senior executive in its wealth-management division filed a lawsuit accusing the bank of fostering a hostile workplace culture and mishandling allegations of misconduct at the top levels of leadership.
The suit was brought by a former global head of platform and experiences at Citi Wealth, who left the firm in August 2024. In her complaint, she alleges that she was effectively forced out after raising concerns about inappropriate conduct by the head of Citi’s wealth business. The filing claims the bank failed to address her complaints fairly and instead turned its internal processes against her.
According to the lawsuit, the executive experienced repeated unwelcome interactions over an extended period, including excessive personal communication and behaviour she describes as manipulative and inappropriate. The complaint further alleges that these actions created an uncomfortable working environment and blurred professional boundaries. Rather than thoroughly examining the conduct of the senior leader, the suit claims the bank focused its investigative efforts on her.
A central allegation is that Citi’s human-resources function conducted a one-sided and biased inquiry. The former executive contends she was told she alone was under investigation for an allegedly improper relationship, while the senior leader named in her complaint was not subject to the same scrutiny. The lawsuit argues this approach reflects a deeper cultural issue within the organisation, where women in senior roles are viewed with suspicion and their advancement is questioned.
Citigroup has strongly denied the allegations, stating that the claims lack merit and will be contested through legal channels.
The case emerges during a sensitive period for the bank. Citigroup is undergoing a major overhaul under its current leadership, including large-scale job cuts and structural simplification aimed at improving performance and accountability. The lawsuit adds pressure to those efforts, raising questions about workplace culture, leadership oversight, and the effectiveness of internal safeguards at one of the world’s largest financial institutions.
