Infosys, one of India’s largest IT services firms, has begun alerting employees who are clocking excessive hours during remote work. The company is urging staff to prioritise work-life balance and take better care of their health, as prolonged work schedules raise concerns about physical and mental well-being.
In a series of personalised emails, Infosys is advising employees to stick to standard working hours—9.15 hours a day, five days a week—even when working from home. If an employee exceeds this average while working remotely, the system flags it, prompting the HR team to send a cautionary email. These messages include a breakdown of days worked remotely, total hours logged, and average daily hours.
The company has implemented this monitoring mechanism following the rollout of its hybrid work policy in November 2023. As per the current policy, employees are required to work from the office at least 10 days each month. Infosys, which employs over 3.2 lakh people, introduced the move to address the growing health risks among tech professionals, particularly young workers vulnerable to stress-related illnesses such as heart disease.
The email communication emphasises that overworking—especially without adequate breaks or recovery—can negatively affect both health and job performance. It encourages employees to set boundaries, take regular breaks, delegate tasks when necessary, and limit work-related interactions outside office hours.
This is the first time many employees have received such direct communication from HR addressing overwork. Previously, employee well-being insights were primarily gathered through annual surveys like Pulse.
The initiative comes amid growing national and global conversations around workplace stress. Recent political and medical discourse has highlighted how stress-related health issues are emerging as silent threats among young professionals, sparking urgent calls for organisations to take action.
