Maharashtra to recover funds from ineligible beneficiaries of Ladki Bahin Scheme

The Maharashtra government has announced that it will initiate recovery of funds from state employees and male beneficiaries who illegally received money under the Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana. The scheme is exclusively meant for women, yet recent scrutiny revealed that several ineligible individuals managed to access the monthly benefit.

The update was shared in the Legislative Council on Tuesday, 09 December, 2025. The Women and Child Development Department informed lawmakers that violations had surfaced during routine checks and beneficiary audits. The issue was raised during question hour by multiple members of the Legislative Council, prompting the government to detail the corrective steps underway.

The government has instructed the concerned department to take action under the Maharashtra Civil Services Rules against employees who availed the benefits despite being ineligible. Officials responsible for facilitating or overlooking these registrations will also face departmental action. Along with disciplinary measures, the process of financial recovery from such beneficiaries has been initiated.

However, the government has adopted a more lenient approach toward women who were earlier included in the scheme but later removed due to eligibility issues. The cabinet has decided against strict recovery from women who voluntarily opted out or were discontinued for technical or procedural reasons. The aim is to ensure that genuine beneficiaries are not burdened unnecessarily.

The Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,500 to eligible women between the ages of 21 and 65 through direct benefit transfer. The programme was introduced to offer financial support and enhance economic independence for women across the state.

The latest move signals the government’s intention to maintain transparency and prevent misuse of welfare schemes while ensuring that rightful beneficiaries continue receiving support.
