The Madhya Pradesh government is preparing to roll out a comprehensive cashless health insurance scheme for its employees and pensioners, a move that could significantly ease the burden of medical expenses for lakhs of families across the state. The initiative is expected to be implemented at the start of 2026 and is being positioned as a structured alternative to the existing reimbursement-based system.
At present, government employees are required to pay medical expenses upfront and later seek reimbursement, a process often criticised for delays and paperwork. The proposed scheme aims to replace this with a card-based, cashless treatment model, allowing beneficiaries to access hospital services directly without immediate out-of-pocket payments. The framework is similar to employee health insurance models already operational in states such as Haryana and Rajasthan.
Tentatively titled the Chief Minister’s Ayushman Health Insurance Scheme, the programme is designed to cover state officers, employees and pensioners. Under the plan, beneficiaries will be eligible for cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh for general medical conditions and up to Rs 10 lakh for critical or serious illnesses. Treatment will be available at empanelled government and private hospitals, both within Madhya Pradesh and outside the state, ensuring wider access to specialised care.
The scheme will be funded through a shared contribution model. A fixed monthly amount, ranging between Rs 250 and Rs 1,000, is expected to be deducted from salaries and pensions, with the state government covering the remaining cost.
The coverage will extend beyond serving employees to include families of retired personnel. Contractual and temporary staff, along with Anganwadi workers, ASHA and Usha workers, home guards, Panchayat-level functionaries, Kotwars and employees of autonomous institutions are also proposed to be brought under the scheme.
The government estimates that over 15 lakh individuals will benefit directly, marking a major step towards strengthening health security for the state’s workforce and their families.
