OpenAI is grappling with a wave of high-profile resignations, while Meta is endeavouring to dominate the superintelligence race. At least eight prominent researchers have reportedly left OpenAI to join Meta’s newly-formed superintelligence team recently. Among those who have moved are Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, Xiaohua Zhai, and several other AI experts
The exits have caused OpenAI’s senior leaders to try and control the situation and take remedial action. Executives have been intervening to reassure employees and address growing concerns. Through emotionally intense and urgent internal communications, leaders are emphasising the importance of loyalty, fairness, and long-term purpose.
OpenAI’s leadership is now looking again at compensation structures and seeking new ways to recognise and retain top talent. The company is reportedly resisting pressure to make reactive counteroffers, choosing to focus on building a sustainable and equitable culture. Efforts include personal outreach to employees with offers from competing firms, particularly from Meta.
Meta, meanwhile, is reportedly pursuing AI talent aggressively, from both OpenAI and Google. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, is said to be directly involved in recruitment. Although reports surfaced that Meta is offering signing bonuses of up to $100 million, the company has denied such claims. Meta’s leadership has clarified that only a small number of top-level hires may receive large compensation packages, and not as upfront cash.
The timing of the departures is rather complex. OpenAI had scheduled a company-wide break to allow employees to recover from exhausting workloads. Meta, it is feared, may exploit this pause to intensify its poaching efforts. Despite the break, OpenAI’s top leaders have committed to remaining available to support staff.
As OpenAI looks to stabilise its workforce, the broader AI talent war is clearly heating up. Clearly, there is fierce competition in the AI space, and it will be interesting to see how companies retain their brightest talent.
