Paramount Skydance begins major layoffs impacting 1000 workers in the US

The restructuring includes the closure of the CBS News bureau in Johannesburg, marking a major retreat from the company’s operations in Africa

Paramount Skydance has begun a sweeping downsizing initiative, cutting 1,000 jobs in the first phase of a broader plan that will ultimately eliminate 2,000 positions worldwide. The restructuring includes the closure of the CBS News bureau in Johannesburg, marking a major retreat from the company’s operations in Africa.

The initial round of layoffs primarily affects employees in the US but also extends to international offices. A second phase, expected in the coming months, will impact another 1,000 workers across the US and global markets. The move is part of Paramount Skydance’s aggressive cost-reduction strategy following the merger earlier this year.

The shutdown of the Johannesburg bureau has drawn particular attention due to the departure of veteran journalist Debora Patta, a respected name in international reporting. Patta, who signed a new three-year contract with CBS in August and was recently promoted to senior foreign correspondent, has reportedly been laid off. Sources suggest she may pursue legal action against CBS over alleged contract violations and incomplete payout terms.

Patta has been a key figure in CBS News’ coverage across Africa and the Middle East and frequently appeared on flagship programmes such as *CBS Evening News*. With the closure of the South African office, oversight of news coverage across the continent will now be managed by CBS’ London bureau.

In addition to the CBS layoffs, employees at Paramount Africa in Johannesburg may also be affected. The company is reportedly evaluating the future of its local operations in South Africa and Nigeria. Led by senior executives Craig Paterson and Monde Twala, Paramount Africa is reassessing its strategy for pay-TV and regional content amid shifting market dynamics.
