Project Roshni – Vision for All has emerged as a significant healthcare lifeline for Mumbai’s diamond workforce, delivering critical eye-care services to 7,999 artisans at the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB). Implemented by Making The Difference Charitable Trust (MTD) in collaboration with the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the initiative focuses on preventive vision care for a community that depends heavily on visual precision.
Conducted at the Bandra Kurla Complex, the campaign aimed to improve access to preventive eye care for artisans whose work relies heavily on accuracy and fine visual detail. The project distributed 6,207 corrective spectacles, offered nutrition kits, and provided appreciation certificates to all participants.
Clinical data from the initiative revealed significant concerns. About 86 per cent of workers showed some form of vision error, and more than half reported dry eye symptoms linked to extended hours of close-up work. Age-related vision issues were also common, with nearly a quarter of the individuals screened requiring long-term monitoring.
Beyond screenings, the project delivered personalised counselling to over 4,000 people, focusing on managing dry eyes and maintaining eye health. Awareness efforts reached an even wider audience, with more than 8,500 workers learning about the importance of biannual eye check-ups. A total of 1,922 individuals were diagnosed with presbyopia and guided on appropriate follow-up.
The initiative also set the stage for continued support. Future plans include counselling for thousands diagnosed with dry eye, medical referrals for glaucoma-suspect cases, and extended awareness drives through 2026.
Project Roshni has emerged as a strong model of collaborative CSR success, combining IGI’s commitment to community welfare with MTD’s on-ground expertise. The programme has brought meaningful change to a workforce whose precision shapes India’s gem industry, restoring clarity, comfort, and confidence to thousands of diamond artisans.
