Google cuts jobs in cloud and cybersecurity teams amid AI push

Google has reportedly reduced headcount across parts of its Cloud business, including teams within its cybersecurity operations, as the company continues to prioritise investments in artificial intelligence and emerging technology initiatives.

According to reports, the workforce reductions have taken place over the past two weeks and have affected multiple teams within Google Cloud. Among the impacted groups is the company’s Threat Intelligence Group, a well-known cybersecurity unit that tracks cyber threats, state-sponsored attacks and global digital- security developments.

The layoffs have also reportedly extended to parts of Mandiant, the cybersecurity firm acquired by Google in 2022 as part of its efforts to strengthen cloud security offerings. Employees affected by the cuts have shared updates on professional networking platforms, although Google has not disclosed the number of roles eliminated.

The company said it periodically reviews its organisational structure to ensure resources are aligned with customer needs and evolving market demands. The latest changes appear to be part of a broader effort to redirect investments towards high-growth areas, particularly artificial intelligence.

The move reflects a wider trend across the technology sector, where companies are reassessing workforce priorities while committing billions of dollars to AI development. As demand for AI infrastructure, products and services accelerates, many organisations are reallocating budgets and talent to support long-term growth opportunities.

Google is not alone in making such adjustments. Several major technology companies have announced workforce changes this year while expanding AI-related investments.

The latest cuts also follow earlier workforce adjustments within Google Cloud. While the overall scale of the reductions remains unclear, the development underscores how AI is increasingly influencing hiring, investment and workforce decisions across the technology industry.
