TCS could have as many AI agents as human employees: N Chandrasekaran

The statement offers a glimpse into how one of India's largest employers is envisioning the next phase of work in the AI era

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is rapidly expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, with chairman N Chandrasekaran indicating that the company could eventually deploy as many AI agents as it has human employees.

Speaking at the company’s Annual General Meeting, Chandrasekaran said TCS is already building a large number of AI agents and suggested that the gap between the number of AI systems and employees could narrow significantly in the future. The statement offers a glimpse into how one of India’s largest employers is envisioning the next phase of work in the AI era.

Despite concerns that AI could disrupt the traditional IT services model, Chandrasekaran maintained that AI represents a major growth opportunity for the industry. He argued that technology services firms will continue to play a crucial role in helping enterprises implement, govern and scale complex AI systems.

Tata Consultancy Services  is already seeing strong business momentum in this area. According to Chandrasekaran, the company’s AI-related revenues have recorded consistent growth over the past four quarters. He noted that AI revenues, on an annualised basis, have approached $2.5 billion, highlighting increasing client demand for AI-led transformation projects.

The TCS chairman also emphasised that the future of AI extends beyond simple automation. Businesses are increasingly looking to redesign operations, customer experiences and decision-making processes using AI technologies. This, he said, will create fresh opportunities for technology partners capable of integrating AI into large, complex organisations.

Another emerging area of focus is the management of AI systems themselves. As enterprises deploy growing numbers of autonomous AI agents, they will require expertise in governance, compliance, monitoring, training and cost optimisation.

Chandrasekaran identified these functions as important future growth avenues for the technology services sector.

He also pointed to rising demand for sovereign AI solutions, particularly among governments and highly-regulated industries seeking greater control over data and security. The company has already introduced sovereign AI infrastructure offerings in India and Europe to address these needs.

The comments underscore how AI is reshaping not just business models but also workforce dynamics within the technology sector. While the prospect of AI agents matching human headcount raises questions about the future of work, TCS believes the technology will ultimately expand the market for digital services rather than diminish it.
