The Uttar Pradesh government has mandated that all government employees declare their movable and immovable assets by 31 August, 2024. This directive is part of a broader initiative aimed at increasing transparency and accountability within the state’s administrative framework.
Employees who fail to comply with this order by the specified deadline will face significant consequences, including the withholding of their salaries for the month of August. This measure could affect up to 13 lakh government workers across the state.
This latest directive comes after several extensions of the original deadline. The initial cut-off date was set for 31 December of the previous year, but it was subsequently extended to 30 June and then to 31 July, reflecting the government’s attempt to provide ample time for compliance. Despite these extensions, compliance has been low, with only 26 per cent of the state’s 17.8 lakh government employees having submitted their asset declarations through the government’s human resources management system, Manav Sampada.
In response to the slow pace of submissions, the government also underscored the importance of adhering to the new 31 August deadline. It made it clear that only those employees who fulfil the requirement will be eligible to receive their salaries. Furthermore, the consequences of non-compliance extend beyond salary withholding; employees who fail to declare their assets may also jeopardise their chances of receiving promotions or advancing within their respective departments.
This rule is uniformly applicable to all categories of officers and employees, !regardless of rank or position.
The Uttar Pradesh government defends this stringent measure as a critical step toward enhancing transparency and curbing corruption within the state’s administration. By requiring detailed asset declarations, the government aims to foster a culture of accountability among its employees.
