Volkswagen’s workforce restructuring is facing growing opposition from employee representatives, with labour leaders warning that as many as 1,40,000 jobs could eventually be exposed to cuts or plant closures.
The figure is a broader estimate of roles that could be affected by the company’s restructuring plans. It includes around 50,000 positions already covered by planned workforce reductions, another 50,000 that could face cuts and approximately 40,000 jobs linked to potential plant closures after 2030. It does not represent a confirmed layoff figure.
Volkswagen is under increasing pressure to lower costs and improve its competitiveness. The automaker is facing intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, weaker margins and higher costs associated with the US tariff environment.
The company has already agreed to substantial workforce reductions. However, discussions around further structural changes are adding to uncertainty among employees and unions.
Several German sites have come under scrutiny over their long-term viability. Locations including Emden, Zwickau and Hanover, along with Audi’s Neckarsulm plant, are among those facing questions about future operations and employment levels.
The situation has also increased tensions between management and employee representatives. Volkswagen’s works council has criticised the way the restructuring has been communicated to employees and has pushed back against additional job reductions and potential plant closures.
CEO Oliver Blume is expected to meet employees at key locations as workers seek greater clarity on the company’s plans and the future of individual sites.
