    ‘Was told to stay silent over accent issues’: Indian techie in US

    An Indian techie working in the US has raised concerns about workplace discrimination after he was allegedly asked to stop speaking in meetings due to his accent. The incident, shared anonymously in a Reddit post, has sparked debate around communication barriers, inclusion, and cultural sensitivity in global work environments.

    The 32-year-old, who described himself as a contractor based in the US for over a year, said the comment came from a senior American team member during a routine project meeting. The Indian employee had simply asked for a progress update and related materials. Instead of a response, he claims he was told not to speak during meetings as his accent was difficult to understand.

    The comment left the employee feeling insulted and dismissed. According to his post, he has consistently made efforts to communicate clearly and professionally and had never received such feedback before. Following the incident, his manager  instructed him to route all future communication with that team member through the manager. Simply put, his direct interaction was restricted.

    The post triggered widespread discussion online. Many users shared similar experiences across cultures and accents. Some sympathised, suggesting it could be a genuine communication barrier rather than intentional discrimination. Others pointed out that global workplaces should provide support systems—such as communication coaching or inclusive practices—to bridge such gaps rather than asking individuals to not speak at all.

    The episode draws attention to the complex dynamics of multicultural teams. The line  between effective communication and respect can be rather fine. With emphasis on inclusivity growing, professional courtesy has come to be more essential than ever before. There is a growing need for empathy and adaptability at work, especially when the workforce is diverse.
