Amazon to cut 370 jobs at Luxembourg HQ as AI reshapes roles

-The layoffs come as part of Amazon’s broader global cost-control drive and follow an earlier announcement of significant workforce reductions worldwide

Amazon is set to reduce its workforce at its European headquarters in Luxembourg, with 370 positions slated to be cut in the coming weeks. The move represents about 8.5 per cent of the company’s local headcount and marks the largest job reduction at the site to date.

The layoffs come as part of Amazon’s broader global cost-control drive and follow an earlier announcement of significant workforce reductions worldwide. The Luxembourg cuts were finalised after mandatory negotiations with employee representatives, resulting in a lower number than initially proposed. Under European labour regulations, such discussions are required before redundancies can be implemented.

Employees in software development roles are expected to be the most affected. The reductions reflect wider shifts across the technology sector, where advances in artificial intelligence are changing how coding and development work is carried out. The timing has raised concerns about the local job market, given Luxembourg’s relatively small workforce and the likelihood that many affected employees will be seeking new roles at the same time.

The layoffs are scheduled to take effect from February. While specific details of severance and support measures have not been disclosed publicly, Amazon has indicated that affected employees will receive assistance during the transition period, in line with locally-negotiated agreements.

Despite the job cuts, Amazon has reiterated the strategic importance of Luxembourg to its European operations. The company remains one of the country’s largest private employers and continues to position the location as a key hub for its regional business. Amazon has also signalled that hiring will continue in selected strategic areas, even as it reduces headcount elsewhere.

The Luxembourg layoffs form part of a longer-term effort by Amazon’s leadership to streamline operations, reduce bureaucracy and redirect investment towards high-growth areas, particularly generative artificial intelligence. While the immediate impact on employees is significant, the company maintains that the restructuring is aimed at strengthening its long-term competitiveness in Europe.
