    Hindustan Zinc emerges as metals sector’s most gender-diverse employer

    The company has set a new benchmark in India’s metals and mining industry, with women now comprising 26.3 % of its total workforce

    Hindustan Zinc has set a new benchmark in India’s metals and mining industry, with women now comprising 26.3 per cent of its total workforce. The development positions the company as the most gender-diverse player in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

    The company currently employs over 745 women professionals. Of these, more than 314 serve as engineers and technical specialists in core operational roles. Women are actively engaged in underground mining, smelting, heavy- equipment operations, mine-rescue teams, and night-shift assignments. Their presence across such roles reflects a broader shift in industry participation.

    Hindustan Zinc has recorded several milestones along the way. It was among the early adopters of deploying women in underground mines. It also established an all-women underground mine rescue team and enabled full participation of women in night shifts across mining and smelting units.

    To further expand representation, the company recently launched a 25-day outreach campaign titled ‘She Knows the Ground She Stands On’. The initiative invited students from leading science institutions to visit operational sites, experience advanced mining technologies, and explore structured career pathways in metallurgy and mining.

    Technology transformation remains central to operations. The company has integrated automation, robotics, tele-remote mining systems, drone surveillance, and real-time analytics under Industry 4.0 practices, improving safety and workplace accessibility.

    Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, stated that the organisation aims to raise diversity levels to 30 per cent by 2030 while ensuring equal growth opportunities. The company also offers policies such as spouse-hiring support, a one-year childcare sabbatical, flexible work options, and integrated townships with schools and healthcare facilities.

    As demand for critical minerals grows, Hindustan Zinc continues to invest in skill-building and mentorship, strengthening its commitment to inclusive growth in the sector.
