Former Amazon employee sues company, alleges retaliation after discrimination complaint

A former Amazon employee has filed a lawsuit in a US federal court, alleging that the company retaliated against him after he raised concerns about discrimination in the workplace. The case, filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Tennessee on 22 June, accuses Amazon of reopening a previously- closed internal investigation and using it as grounds for his dismissal.

The plaintiff, Matthew Vaughn, who has represented himself in the filing, worked at Amazon’s MEM5 fulfilment centre in Memphis for nearly five years after joining the company in 2019. Amazon has not yet filed its response to the complaint, and the allegations have not been examined by the court.

According to the lawsuit, Vaughn had no disciplinary record until he formally complained in March 2024 about what he believed was unequal enforcement of workplace policies based on race and age. The complaint alleges that shortly after he raised these concerns, the company initiated disciplinary proceedings linked to allegations dating back several months.

The lawsuit claims the internal investigation initially concluded with a written warning after the investigator reportedly found insufficient evidence to support the allegations. However, the complaint alleges that the matter was later reopened by HR, with additional allegations incorporated before the company decided to terminate his employment in April 2024.

Vaughn further alleges inconsistencies in Amazon’s disciplinary process, claiming employees involved in comparable incidents were treated differently. The lawsuit includes claims of retaliation, race, sex and age discrimination, hostile work environment, and intentional racial discrimination under US federal law.

The case places renewed attention on the integrity of workplace investigations and the handling of employee complaints. It also highlights the importance of maintaining consistent disciplinary processes, documentation and procedural fairness when addressing allegations involving discrimination or protected employee activity.

The matter will now proceed through the federal court process, where both parties will have an opportunity to present their arguments.
