Porsche plans up to 8,900 job cuts in Germany by 2035

Porsche is reportedly planning to cut around 8,900 jobs in Germany by the end of 2035, as the luxury carmaker steps up efforts to improve its financial performance.

According to Automotive News, the latest plan adds 5,000 positions to the 3,900 redundancies already announced, reducing Porsche’s German workforce from around 23,000 employees.

The proposal has reportedly been approved by the company’s supervisory board after being put forward by CEO Michael Leiters as part of a broader restructuring strategy.

The additional reductions are expected to be achieved through natural attrition, early retirement and voluntary severance, with administrative and research and development (R&D) roles likely to be most affected. Porsche’s Weissach development centre is expected to bear a significant share of the impact.

The workforce restructuring comes as Porsche grapples with financial pressures following changes to its electric-vehicle strategy. The company has said it needs to reach a cost structure that allows it to break even while selling around 1,80,000 vehicles annually, despite selling nearly 280,000 vehicles in 2025.

The carmaker has also projected a decline in operating profit following its shift in EV plans, prompting further efforts to streamline operations and improve long-term profitability.
