GitLab plans first India office in Bengaluru, looks to expand workforce

US-based software development platform, GitLab plans to establish its first physical office in India, with Bengaluru emerging as the likely location, as it looks to expand its workforce across engineering, sales, marketing and administrative functions.

Bill Staples, CEO, GitLab, outlined the expansion plans in an interview with Moneycontrol published on 9 October, 2026, identifying India as an important market for the company. GitLab has not disclosed a hiring target, investment amount or timeline for opening the proposed office.

The move marks a shift for the company, which has traditionally operated through a remote-first model. GitLab is already advertising Bengaluru-based positions alongside remote opportunities across India, including roles in engineering, technical leadership, customer support and recruitment.

The planned expansion comes amid a restructuring of GitLab’s international operations. In June 2026, the company announced plans to exit 22 countries and reduce its geographic footprint by approximately 37 per cent. The restructuring involved around 350 job cuts, representing roughly 14 per cent of its workforce.

The move towards a stronger presence in India while scaling back operations in other markets points to a more selective approach to geographic investment, with the company seeking to concentrate resources in markets offering opportunities for talent acquisition and business growth.

GitLab’s expansion also coincides with its growing focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and automated software development. Its DevSecOps platform helps organisations develop, test, secure and deploy applications, while its evolving AI capabilities aim to automate tasks such as code reviews, testing and security checks.

A larger Indian workforce could support both platform development and customer-facing operations as businesses increasingly adopt AI-assisted software engineering. However, GitLab has not confirmed whether the proposed Bengaluru office will focus on AI development or operate as a dedicated global capability centre (GCC).

The office’s final location, opening date, investment and employment targets are yet to be announced.
