NTT DATA plans to nearly triple its workforce in Mangaluru, increasing its employee strength from around 900 currently to more than 2,500 by the end of 2027. The expansion is expected to strengthen Karnataka’s efforts to develop technology and employment hubs beyond Bengaluru.

The plans were reportedly discussed during a meeting between the company’s senior global leadership and Karnataka IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge in Bengaluru.

NTT DATA entered Mangaluru through its acquisition of Niveus Solutions and is positioning the coastal city, alongside Bengaluru, as a key location for building capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and data.

The proposed expansion will focus on specialised capabilities across healthcare and life sciences, high technology, automotive, manufacturing, AI and data. This signals a move towards building domain-specific technology expertise alongside conventional IT services.

The company is also planning a campus in Mangaluru, which is expected to create opportunities for professionals with a combination of technology skills and industry knowledge.

The Karnataka government will also support the expansion through industry-aligned skilling initiatives, infrastructure development and partnerships with academic institutions. It will also explore collaborations between NTT DATA and the state’s startup and deep-tech ecosystem to develop technology solutions.

The expansion aligns with Karnataka’s broader efforts to strengthen technology hubs beyond Bengaluru, with Mangaluru emerging as an additional centre for technology investment and employment. The state government is expected to support the initiative through industry-aligned skilling, infrastructure development and partnerships with academic institutions.

The proposed collaboration also reflects the potential for greater industry engagement with Karnataka’s startup and deep-tech ecosystem, particularly in developing solutions across emerging technology areas.
