Commercial vehicle marketplace startup 91trucks has undertaken a significant restructuring exercise that has led to large-scale workforce reductions and the closure of several retail outlets across the country.
The company has reduced its employee strength substantially over the past few weeks as part of efforts to realign operations with current business realities. While the company has not disclosed exact numbers, industry sources indicate that around 100 employees have exited the organisation, leaving a significantly smaller workforce.
The restructuring follows slower-than-anticipated business growth over the past six months. According to people familiar with the matter, the startup had planned for faster expansion, but demand in the commercial vehicle sector did not recover at the expected pace. Market uncertainties, challenging macroeconomic conditions and cautious spending by transport operators have impacted vehicle purchases, affecting businesses across the ecosystem.
As part of the overhaul, 91trucks has also scaled back its offline footprint. Nearly two dozen stores have reportedly been shut, with a large number of closures taking place in southern India and parts of Madhya Pradesh. The company has decided to concentrate its efforts on markets where it sees stronger growth potential and operational efficiency.
The restructuring has extended to the leadership team as well, with reports indicating the departure of a senior executive in recent weeks. The company has not commented on individual exits.
91trucks said it is now focusing on strengthening its presence in northern India while streamlining operations in selected geographies. The company cited operational complexities, including regulatory and vehicle registration transfer processes, as factors influencing its decision to exit certain markets.
The development comes only months after the startup acquired mobility platforms Motorfloor and Trucksfloor to expand its commercial vehicle ecosystem. It also follows reports that the company explored a fresh funding round that did not materialise.
Founded by Siddharth Sharma, Abhishek Gautam and Vikas Sharma, 91trucks operates a platform offering vehicle discovery, financing and related services. The company’s restructuring reflects the broader challenges facing startups in the automotive and mobility sectors, where subdued demand and tighter funding conditions are prompting businesses to reassess expansion plans and operating costs.
