In a move aimed at strengthening tourism infrastructure and promoting local destinations, the Bihar government has directed state government employees to undertake mandatory travel across the state every three months. The initiative requires officials to visit tourist destinations with their families and provide structured feedback to help improve tourism experiences and infrastructure.
Under the new directive issued by the General Administration Department (GAD), employees will have to undertake a two-day and two-night trip once every quarter. The travel is expected to be scheduled preferably on Fridays and Saturdays. Officials have also been instructed to travel outside their home districts and cover at least three destinations during each visit.
The order places special emphasis on eco-tourism and rural tourism sites. Employees will be required to stay overnight at the locations and document their experiences. The duration of the travel and stay will be treated as official duty, allowing employees to participate without it affecting their work schedules.
After completing the visits, employees must submit detailed reports to their department heads or district authorities. The reports are expected to include observations, personal experiences, destination details and photographs. The government plans to use this feedback to identify gaps and opportunities for tourism development.
The directive also places restrictions on official work during these trips. Employees undertaking the visits will not be permitted to conduct inspections, hold review meetings or operate from official residences during the travel period. The objective is to ensure that the visits remain focused on experiencing destinations from a visitor’s perspective rather than functioning as routine administrative tours.
To manage implementation, nodal officers will be appointed across district administrations and departments. These officials will compile feedback and forward reports to departments connected with tourism, culture and environmental development.
The initiative reflects Bihar’s broader attempt to strengthen its tourism ecosystem by encouraging direct engagement with the state’s cultural, rural and heritage destinations while simultaneously gathering ground-level insights for future development planning.
