DA delay triggers nationwide protest call by Central government employees

The protest is expected to see participation from departments such as income tax, postal services, agriculture, and key survey organisations

A rare delay in the announcement of dearness allowance (DA) has sparked discontent among Central government employees and pensioners, prompting a nationwide protest call.

The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers has announced a lunch-hour demonstration across workplaces on 16 April, 2026. The move comes as the government is yet to declare the DA hike due from 1 January, 2026, leaving both employees and pensioners awaiting clarity on their revised benefits.

In a formal communication to the Cabinet Secretary, the organisation stated that its affiliated unions would mobilise employees across departments to demand an immediate announcement of the pending DA and the corresponding dearness relief (DR) for pensioners. The protest is expected to see participation from departments such as income tax, postal services, agriculture, and key survey organisations.

The delay is notable because DA revisions under the 7th Central Pay Commission have typically been announced without such prolonged gaps since 2016. Many employees had anticipated the revision around early March this year, but no official update has been issued so far.

Based on the average movement of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers, the DA hike is expected to be in the range of 2 to 3 per cent. If approved, this would take the current DA rate from 58 per cent to around 60 or 61 per cent, resulting in modest increases in monthly salaries across pay bands.

While administrative processes and approvals are believed to be contributing to the delay, the prolonged wait has raised concerns among employees, especially as discussions around the upcoming 8th Pay Commission gather momentum.

The protest underscores growing impatience within the workforce and signals pressure on the government to expedite the announcement. The eventual decision will not only impact take-home salaries but also set the tone for broader compensation expectations in the public sector.
