Meta? has unveiled a new workforce-development initiative aimed at addressing the growing demand for skilled workers needed to build the data centres powering the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.
Called America’s Workforce Academy, the programme will provide free training in construction and technical trades, along with a pathway to employment on Meta-backed data-centre projects. The company has committed $115 million towards the initiative as it ramps up investments in AI infrastructure across the US.
The five-week programme will train participants in high-demand roles such as electrical work, HVAC installation, welding, plumbing and fibre-optic technology. Graduates will receive industry-recognised credentials and will be connected directly with general contractors working on active Meta data centre construction sites.
The initiative is being launched in partnership with commercial real-estate services firm CBRE and the Associated Builders and Contractors. The pilot phase will begin in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana and Texas, states that already host or are expected to host Meta’s data centre operations.
The programme highlights an emerging shift in hiring priorities within the technology industry. While companies have traditionally focused on recruiting software engineers and digital talent, the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure is creating demand for a different category of workers: electricians, welders, fibre technicians and other skilled tradespeople.
Meta’s growing data centre footprint is driving much of this need. The company is investing heavily in the physical infrastructure required to support increasingly sophisticated AI models and services used by billions of people worldwide.
The move also comes amid broader workforce changes at the company. Even as Meta has reduced parts of its corporate workforce in recent years, it is simultaneously creating opportunities in blue-collar and technical fields tied to data-centre construction and operations.
By combining short-term training with direct employment opportunities, Meta’s Workforce Academy seeks to build a pipeline of skilled workers equipped to support the next phase of AI-led growth. The initiative also reflects how the artificial intelligence race is reshaping labour markets beyond traditional technology roles, creating new career pathways in the skilled trades sector.
