Microsoft mandates 3-days a week in office

The new hybrid work mandate will be phased in starting February 2026 at Microsoft’s Puget Sound headquarters before extending to other US offices

Microsoft is rolling back one of its most significant pandemic-era policies by requiring employees to return to the office at least three days a week, _The Verge_ reported.

In a memo to staff, Amy Coleman, executive vice president and chief people officer, said company data shows employees “thrive” when collaborating in person, citing stronger results and higher energy levels.

The new hybrid work mandate will be phased in starting February 2026 at Microsoft’s Puget Sound headquarters before extending to other US offices and, eventually, international locations. Employees living within 50 miles of a Microsoft office will be expected to comply by the end of February.

Not all roles will be affected. Client-facing teams in account management, consulting, and field marketing will retain greater flexibility. Employees can also apply for exemptions until 19 September in cases where they have no teammates at their assigned office or face unusually complex commutes.

Some groups may be required to exceed the baseline, with certain teams expected to work onsite four or even five days a week depending on business needs.

The company framed the move as critical to its push into artificial intelligence, arguing that face-to-face collaboration accelerates innovation. Microsoft further stressed the policy is not tied to job cuts but is intended to bring greater consistency across teams. The company also pledged enhanced workplace safety and security as offices get busier.

Outside the US, the mandate will be applied only after 2026. Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft, and Coleman are expected to elaborate on the changes at the company’s Employee Town Hall on 11 September.
