Reddit post on private bank manager sparks debate on empathy at work

A Reddit post describing an alleged lack of empathy by a private bank manager has reignited discussion around employee rights, caregiving responsibilities and workplace culture in India. The post, which has gained significant attention online, claims that a woman employee resigned after being denied leave to care for her critically ill mother.

The account was shared on the r/IndianWorkplace subreddit by a user who said the employee had requested a few days off after her mother’s health deteriorated due to incorrect medication. According to the post, the manager refused the request and suggested alternative arrangements for the mother’s care, effectively asking the employee to prioritise work over the medical emergency.

The situation reportedly left the employee with a difficult decision between continuing work without leave or staying with her ailing parent. She chose to remain with her mother and subsequently resigned from her position, despite having spent several years with the organisation.

The post did not disclose the name of the bank or the individuals involved, and the claims have not been independently verified. No official response has been issued by the bank so far.

The story quickly gained traction on social media, drawing hundreds of upvotes and comments. Many users criticised what they described as an absence of basic compassion in managerial behaviour. Others advised employees to seek written communication in such situations to protect themselves, while some questioned why the employee chose to resign rather than pursue formal escalation or wait for official action.

The discussion highlights an ongoing challenge for corporate India: balancing operational demands with humane leadership, especially when employees face emergencies that extend beyond the workplace.
