Biranchi Das, director (human resources), South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), has been entrusted with the additional charge of director (human resources), Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL), effective 1 July, 2026. Das will hold the additional responsibility for six months, until a regular director (HR) is appointed at MCL or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Das has been serving as director HR at SECL since March 2024. With nearly three decades of experience, he has built deep expertise in human resource management, industrial relations, employee welfare, and workforce relations across the coal mining sector.

An alumnus of the PMIR Department at Utkal University, Das began his career in 1994 as a welfare officer (trainee) at Deulbera Colliery in MCL’s Talcher Area. Over the past 29 years, he has held several HR leadership positions within Coal India subsidiaries, contributing significantly to industrial relations and HR policy development.

During his tenure at MCL, he played a key role in framing the House Allotment Committee Rules for non-executives and drafting the company’s Certified Standing Orders. He also made notable contributions to strengthening industrial relations while serving in the Industrial Relations Department at MCL headquarters.

Das assumed the role of director (HR) at SECL following the retirement of the previous incumbent, after which, Dr Prem Sagar Mishra,  chairman-cum-managing director, SECL, had been holding the additional charge.

With this additional responsibility, Das is expected to steer MCL’s people agenda, focusing on industrial relations, employee welfare, HR strategy, and workforce management while continuing his responsibilities at SECL.
