Emmanuel David will superannuate as the director of Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) and Anand Shankar will succeed him. Shankar is a senior corporate leader with more than three decades of professional experience. Prior to this, he was with Deloitte as partner leader – HR transformation. Shankar is presently in the middle of a transitioning period and will fully take over all the responsibilities by July 31.

In fact, Shankar’s life will come a full circle now because he started his career with Taj Hotels, a part of the Tata Group, in 1988 as a manager. After Taj Hotels, he went on to work for companies, such as Aon and Talent2 International.

Shankar has mostly served in the area of operations and client development in the HR services sector. In his entire career, he has worked majorly with Aon, where he joined for the first time in 1996 and reached the level of a regional manager for Asia Pacific and ended up working with them for 11 years. After a short stint of two years at Talent2 International he rejoined Aon in 2009 as chief commercial officer, Asia Pacific. He served his last position at Aon as global chief commercial officer – talent, rewards and performance.

While talking with HRKatha, Shankar shares that currently the focus will be on three things –

    – To make sure that the values and the fabric of the TMTC which has remained the same for so many years stays intact.

     – Moving towards more digital learning.

    – Aligning leadership development at the Tata Group with the future needs and requirements of the company.

“I am really excited to work with the Tata Group again. It feels like ‘coming back home’. The values and culture of Tata is still the same. I wish that my experience as a consultant will add value to the company,” says Shankar.

The mail which was sent out by Nupur Singh Mallick, group CHRO, Tata Group, to all employees announcing Shankar’s appointment is as follows:

    Dear all,

Pleased to announce the appointment of Anand Shankar as director – TMTC.

Anand was a senior partner with Deloitte and leader of the firm’s HR transformation practice. An alumnus of The University of Chicago Booth School of Business, he is a seasoned strategist who has helped organisations drive transformational change and build talent excellence, critical capabilities, and future leaders across geographies.

Immediately before Deloitte, Anand was the global chief commercial officer for Aon Hewitt.

He has joined TMTC effective June 1, 2021 and will be working closely with me to drive the talent and learning agenda. Please join me in welcoming Anand to this new role.

After serving the group for 10 years, Emmanuel David will be superannuating from his role as Director TMTC in July 2021. He contributed significantly towards building upon the heritage and strong foundations of TMTC. We would like to thank him for his valuable contribution to our organization and wish him all the best for future endeavours.”

David served at TMTC for almost six years and has spent a decade at the Tata Group. And XLRI alumnus, David started his career with Hindustan Motors and has served in the HR domain for more than three decades. In his long career he has worked for multiple brands, including Eicher, The Oberoi, Shriram Honda, Volvo India, SREI Infrastructure Finance and Ramky Group.

Looking back at his career with Tata Group, David is satisfied with his work and what he did for the Company. “I and my team at TMTC were able to provide high-quality learning at Tata Group. I believe in democratising learning and am satisfied that I was able to live up to that at the Group,” shared David with HRKatha.

After his retirement, David has decided to focus on writing and publishing books, and also spending quality time with his family members.

David and myself worked together thrice in different companies in 3 decades. David is one of the finest human being I have come across. One should be first a good human being to be HR function. David’s intellect and passion for his job inspired many. I wish all the best to David in his new avatar post retirement.

Emmanuel hails from a rare breed of leaders who avoid instant results. I look at myself and others who have had the previlege of workign with Emmy, and speak with pride of knowing that he has truly groomed and moulded a generation of leaders.

During my stint with him in 2 different companies, conversations will always move away from an operational realm to strategy. With him, it would always be why not and never a why….

He surely makes his presence felt in the room and it will be missed for sure.
