Tata Steel deploys women across all shifts in Kalinganagar logistics operations

Tata Steel has achieved another milestone in advancing workplace diversity by deploying women employees across all three shifts in the Outbound Logistics department at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha. The move marks a significant step in reshaping gender dynamics in heavy industry, a space traditionally dominated by men.

The development follows Tata Steel’s pioneering initiative in December 2024, when the company introduced India’s first all-women shift at the Noamundi iron mine in Jharkhand. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of MOSAIC, Tata Steel’s flagship diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programme, under which several landmark initiatives have been launched to improve women’s participation in industrial roles.

In January 2025, Tata Steel Kalinganagar welcomed 39 trade apprentices from the 2023 batch, of which 26 were women. Eighteen of them were inducted into outbound logistics, where they underwent intensive training in safety, quality processes, inventory management, dispatch operations, and the use of digital tools. Their induction combined classroom learning with on-the-job exposure, enabling them to take on both field and system-based responsibilities.

Over the years, Tata Steel has steadily widened the scope of women’s roles in core operations. In 2019, it became the first company in India to deploy women mining engineers in all shifts at its Noamundi mine. In 2024, it broke new ground by introducing an all-women mining shift. The company also launched the ‘Flames of Change’ initiative, creating the country’s first all-women firefighting crew in the steel sector.

By pushing boundaries in mining, logistics and industrial safety, Tata Steel is setting benchmarks for inclusivity in manufacturing. The latest milestone at Kalinganagar underscores its long-term vision of building a truly equitable workplace.
