Tokyo Electron (TEL), a Japanese electronics and semiconductor giant, has entered into a strategic agreement with Tata Electronics. TEL will supply equipment and provide training to employees of Tata Electronics, which is setting up India’s first semiconductor fabrication (fab) facility. The facility is being developed in partnership with
Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation.
Announced on 9 September, the agreement marks a significant step in India’s goal to become a key player in the global semiconductor market.
The partnership with TEL is seen as vital for Tata Electronics to meet its production goals. The collaboration will enable Tata Electronics to leverage TEL’s expertise in semiconductor manufacturing equipment and technologies, ensuring the new fab and packaging facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and capabilities.
TEL’s role will also include helping Tata Electronics build a skilled workforce that can handle the complexities of semiconductor manufacturing and assembly.
The strategic partnership will encompass both front-end fabrication processes and back-end packaging technologies, creating a comprehensive semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem in India. TEL’s extensive experience in the semiconductor equipment space is anticipated to help Tata Electronics create a dynamic ecosystem that supports rapid innovation across multiple technology nodes.
Tata Electronics is investing Rs 91,000 crore in the new chip-fabrication unit, located in Dholera, Gujarat. This facility will serve as a cornerstone in India’s efforts to create a domestic semiconductor ecosystem and reduce its reliance on foreign chipmakers. In addition to the Dholera fab, Tata Electronics also plans to invest another Rs 27,000 crore in a greenfield facility in Jagiroad, Assam, which will focus on the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips. Together, these facilities are expected to produce a wide range of semiconductor chips for use in automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and other key technology sectors, catering to customers worldwide.
Tata Electronics has outlined a bold vision to become a leader in electronics manufacturing by offering integrated solutions across the entire value chain. Additionally, the collaboration with TEL is further expected to accelerate the development of Tata Electronics’ facilities, which are slated to begin chip production by 2026.
