Amazon reaches out to former employees for AI, ML and cloud roles

The outreach comes after Amazon cut around 30,000 roles in two major rounds, even as it continued hiring for selected skills

Amazon is reaching back into its former workforce for talent in artificial intelligence, machine learning and cloud computing, including approaching some employees who had previously been laid off.

Recruiters have contacted eligible former employees about open positions in AI and cloud businesses, according to emails obtained by Business Insider and comments from an Amazon spokesperson. The report did not disclose how many former employees had been contacted or how many had subsequently returned to the company.

In August, a recruiter from Amazon’s AI agent organisation approached former employees with AI and machine-learning experience about new opportunities. The organisation is led by Amazon Web Services vice-president Swami Sivasubramanian, and the recruiter described the outreach as the “Swami’s Boomerang Reengagement Initiative”.

Another AWS Finance recruiter reportedly approached a former employee with the prospect of a shortened interview process that could lead to an offer. The recruiter also asked whether Amazon’s return-to-office policy had influenced the employee’s decision to leave. Business Insider did not identify that individual as someone who had previously been laid off.

Amazon, however, says the outreach should not be interpreted as a new rehiring programme created in response to its recent job cuts.

A company spokesperson told Business Insider that bringing former employees back is a longstanding practice across Amazon and is not restricted to AI or cloud roles. Employees who were previously laid off can also be considered for available positions.

The company also said it was not specifically targeting employees who had left because of its return-to-office requirements, and that its office policy had not changed.

The outreach is notable because it follows two large rounds of workforce reductions. Amazon announced around 14,000 corporate job cuts in October 2025, followed by another 16,000 reductions in January 2026.

Even while announcing those reductions, however, Amazon made clear that it would continue hiring in selected areas while eliminating positions elsewhere. The latest outreach provides a glimpse of what that rebalancing can look like in practice: overall headcount can fall while demand remains strong for particular capabilities.

AI sits at the centre of that changing workforce equation.

In a June 2025 message to employees, CEO Andy Jassy said wider adoption of generative AI and AI agents would change the work performed across Amazon. The company would need fewer people doing some jobs and more people doing others, he said.

Jassy also said he expected efficiency gains from AI to reduce Amazon’s total corporate workforce over the following few years, while acknowledging that it was difficult to predict exactly how the numbers would eventually balance out.

Amazon’s latest recruitment outreach therefore does not necessarily signal a reversal of its workforce reductions. It points instead to a more selective reshaping of the workforce, with some roles disappearing even as the company competes for skills it considers increasingly important.
