Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup, DeepSeek is preparing to significantly expand its workforce as it scales operations following a major fundraising round.
The Hangzhou-based company has announced plans to at least double the size of every department, with recruitment focused primarily on technical and engineering roles. The hiring push is part of its broader strategy to strengthen research and product development as competition intensifies in the global AI industry.
The expansion comes as DeepSeek nears the completion of a funding round worth approximately 50 billion yuan (around $7 billion), one of the largest startup fundraises in China. The fresh capital is expected to accelerate the company’s growth, support infrastructure expansion and enhance its AI capabilities.
In a statement shared on WeChat, DeepSeek said it is increasing headcount across all functions to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and future business requirements.
The recruitment drive signals the company’s ambition to compete more aggressively with both Chinese AI firms and global players such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Over the past year, DeepSeek has emerged as one of China’s fastest-growing AI startups, attracting attention for its large language models and rapid product development.
The announcement highlights the continued demand for AI talent despite broader hiring slowdowns in several technology segments. Companies investing heavily in artificial intelligence are increasingly competing for engineers, researchers and machine learning specialists capable of building next-generation AI systems.
The planned workforce expansion also reflects a wider trend across the AI sector, where companies are prioritising strategic hiring even as they maintain tighter control over spending in other business functions. With substantial funding expected to be finalised, DeepSeek is positioning itself for its next phase of growth through an aggressive talent- acquisition strategy.
