Employee faces weekend work demand after not sharing personal plans

Instead of acknowledging boundaries, the manager insisted on knowing the exact timing of the family event and pushed for forecast submissions

A Reddit post has sparked widespread discussion after an employee revealed how his manager pressured him to disclose his weekend plans—and even pushed him to work on a Sunday—despite his role following a Monday-to-Friday schedule.

The employee shared his experience on r/IndianWorkplace, explaining that he had a family function on Saturday. Since the event fell on his weekly off, he assumed no prior intimation to his manager was required. However, this simple decision led to an unexpected spiral of demands.

In his post, the man recounted how his manager wanted several reports prepared early Saturday morning to present later that day. When he explained that he would be unavailable due to the function, the conversation reportedly took a bizarre turn. A screenshot attached to the post showed increasing pressure from the manager, who insisted he should have been informed about the employee’s weekend plans in advance.

The employee tried to highlight the absurdity of rearranging personal commitments for work on a non-working day. Instead of acknowledging boundaries, the manager insisted on knowing the exact timing of the family event and pushed for forecast submissions by Sunday.

The employee wrote that this wasn’t the first time he had tried to establish limits. He had repeatedly communicated that weekends were meant for personal responsibilities and classes, yet his manager continued to expect full availability.

His experience resonated with many users, who described similar workplace pressures. Commenters emphasised the importance of drawing firm boundaries, urging him not to entertain weekend work without compensation. Others advised muting work messages outside office hours to prevent such expectations from growing further.

Several users noted that this kind of overreach is common in many Indian workplaces, where official policies often clash with managerial behaviour, leaving employees to fight for basic work-life separation.

See the amount of pressure the manager might have been undergoing in the helm of affairs.

Adarsh Oberoi, I pity the poor fellows who are forced to work or will be forced to work in the future under a cunt like you.

This kind of behaviour from the managers, senior team members and even from the organisation’s CEO and founders have become very common in the Indian organisations. They demand their team members to be available before work hours start, after the person has left the office premises for the day (from home till they sleep) and weekends and holidays. They’d say this is not your festival so you should work and submit the documents/report etc.

If the person says that they got other plans and will not be able to work, than he/she has to hear abusive words and shoutings.

This kind of unprofessional behaviour leads to toxic work environment and further ruins a person’s personal life and health.
THIS SHOULD STRICTLY STOP! PEOPLE WHO DO NOT RESPECT OTHER PERSON’S WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE BOUNDARIES SHOULD BE CALLED OUT AND THEIR COMPANY’S WORK LICENCE SHOULD BE CANCELLED/BANNED AND THEY SHOULD BE ASKED TO PAY 3 TIMES MORE FOR HARASSING.
