The Haryana government is exploring the introduction of sugar industry-focused courses in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) as part of its efforts to enhance employability and create a dedicated talent pipeline for the state’s sugar sector.

The proposal was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi, where officials discussed the need for specialised training programmes aligned with the operational requirements of sugar mills. The initiative is aimed at equipping young people with industry-relevant skills while addressing the workforce needs of the sector.

Discussions centred on launching technical, vocational and diploma-level programmes that would prepare students for a range of roles within the sugar industry. Authorities examined courses identified by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), the Directorate General of Training (DGT) and other recognised institutions to determine their suitability for implementation in Haryana’s ITIs.

Among the programmes under consideration are courses in agro-processing, sugar processing operations, sugar boiling and quality control. The proposed curriculum also includes training for boiler attendants, diploma courses in boiler operations and postgraduate diploma programmes in sugar technology.

In addition, the government is evaluating specialised courses covering instrumentation and automation, environmental science, productivity and maturity management, as well as advanced boiler operations. These disciplines are expected to support the increasing technological and operational requirements of modern sugar manufacturing facilities.

To expedite the process, the chief secretary directed the formation of a committee. Additionally, the committee has been asked to submit its recommendations within 14 days.

The move reflects the state’s broader focus on strengthening vocational education by aligning training offerings with sector-specific demands. By introducing specialised programmes tailored to the sugar industry, Haryana aims to improve employment opportunities for young people while ensuring the availability of a skilled workforce capable of supporting the industry’s future growth and competitiveness.
