US authorities have arrested 39-year-old Mehul Goswami, an Indian-origin resident of Colonie, New York, for allegedly working two full-time jobs simultaneously and misusing more than $50,000 in taxpayer money.
According to officials, Goswami was employed remotely by the New York State Office of Information Technology Services when he secretly accepted another position with GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor company based in Malta, New York, in March 2022. Reportedly, he worked for the private contractor during the same hours he was expected to perform his state duties.
The alleged double employment came to light after a joint investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office. Authorities claim Goswami systematically performed both jobs for an extended period, effectively collecting two full-time salaries while neglecting his responsibilities as a state employee.
Officials described his actions as a serious breach of public trust, stressing that government employees are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity. Misusing taxpayer funds for personal gain, they said, undermines confidence in public institutions and diverts resources meant for citizens.
Goswami was arraigned in Malta Town Court last week and released on his own recognisance while awaiting trial. He faces a charge of grand larceny in the second degree, a Class C felony under New York law, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years.
Authorities have pledged to continue pursuing cases involving misuse of public funds, warning that employees found exploiting state positions for personal benefit will be held fully accountable.
