IndusInd Bank is preparing to expand a hybrid work model for selected employees across India, marking a notable shift in a sector traditionally associated with office-based operations. The move comes as organisations increasingly revisit flexible work structures while balancing operational requirements and efficiency goals.
The private sector lender had earlier conducted a pilot programme involving employees from technology, marketing and human resources functions. Under the trial, employees were allowed to work remotely for two days a week. Following positive responses from participants, the bank has now decided to broaden the initiative and extend it to additional functions.
The next phase of the rollout will include a wider range of operational roles. The expanded framework is expected to cover functions linked to digital, operational and regulatory responsibilities that support the bank’s broader business operations and customer- management systems.
The model, however, will not operate as a fully remote arrangement. Employees covered under the policy will continue to work from their designated cities and remain available to attend office whenever business needs require physical presence.
The decision comes at a time when conversations around work flexibility have re-emerged following recent calls for fuel conservation and reduced expenditure amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical developments in West Asia. Several organisations have begun exploring virtual work arrangements and digital alternatives to reduce commuting-related costs.
Despite the shift, the bank is expected to maintain traditional work structures for branch operations and customer-facing roles. Core banking functions involving direct customer interactions and essential services will continue to operate primarily through physical workplaces.
The move reflects a gradual evolution within the banking industry, where hybrid work models remain limited compared to technology and consulting sectors. While flexibility in banking has largely remained role-dependent, institutions are increasingly exploring workplace models that balance employee expectations, operational continuity and changing business priorities.
