Laid-off employee’s Reddit post on ‘silent office culture’ sparks debate

A Reddit post by an employee describing an unexpected culture shock after moving from a multinational company to an Indian workplace has triggered widespread online discussion around office culture, social connection and changing expectations from corporate life.

The employee shared that they lost their previous job in January after receiving a layoff notification via email. The period that followed brought financial pressure and uncertainty. Recently married and managing ongoing expenses, including car loan payments, the individual said they spent nearly three months applying for jobs and navigating repeated interview rejections before finally securing a new opportunity.

After sending more than 200 applications and facing several unsuccessful interview rounds, the employee accepted an offer from an Indian company. Former colleagues had reportedly warned that the hiring market remained weak and that layoffs across industries could continue, making the decision feel urgent.

However, the adjustment to the new workplace proved more difficult than expected. The employee described the transition as a major shift from the environment of a previous multinational workplace, where engagement activities, flexible work arrangements, leadership interactions and frequent team events were common. Work-from-home options and a socially-active culture had shaped their expectations of professional life.

In contrast, the employee described the current office as noticeably quiet and isolated. According to the post, employees arrive, work through the day and interact mainly for task-related discussions. The user also claimed there was little onboarding interaction and described feeling socially disconnected during the first few weeks at work.

The post quickly attracted strong reactions online. Many users argued that the issue reflected an adjustment challenge rather than a toxic workplace culture. Several commenters viewed a quiet, low-pressure office as desirable, saying many employees prefer work environments focused on productivity over organised social activities.

Others suggested taking initiative by reaching out to colleagues directly rather than waiting for interactions to happen naturally. Some noted that workplace expectations vary significantly and that employees increasingly separate professional relationships from personal social life.

In a later update, the employee reflected on the responses and admitted that previous experiences may have shaped unrealistic assumptions about what a typical workplace environment looks like. The user acknowledged feeling stressed while adapting to an unfamiliar setting and suggested that the earlier workplace may have been more of an exception than the norm.
