Squarespace to cut 19% of workforce

The restructuring will create smaller teams, give employees greater hands-on responsibility and reduce organisational layers

Website-building platform Squarespace is reducing its global workforce by approximately 19 per cent, eliminating around 300 positions as it restructures its operations and redefines how teams work. Product and engineering functions are expected to bear the largest share of the job cuts.

The company confirmed the workforce reduction to _Hindustan Times_, describing it as part of an effort to simplify its organisational structure, streamline priorities and improve the speed of decision-making as it prepares for its next phase of growth.

In an internal communication to employees,  Anthony Casalena, CEO, Squarespace, indicated that the company’s existing operating model needed to evolve in response to changing demands across the technology sector. The restructuring will involve moving towards smaller teams, giving greater responsibility to employees who combine leadership with hands-on execution, and reducing layers of organisational complexity.

The changes come as website-development platforms undergo a shift in how products are built and used. Generative AI tools are increasingly allowing users to create website layouts, generate content and structure web pages through text prompts, reducing the technical effort traditionally involved in building an online presence.

Squarespace has also been introducing generative AI features across its platform. While the company has linked the latest job cuts to organisational efficiency and a need to adapt its operating model, the growing use of AI in website creation forms part of the broader industry backdrop against which the restructuring is taking place.

The company has outlined a support package for employees affected by the decision. Departing staff will receive a minimum of 16 weeks of base salary as severance, with additional payments based on their tenure. Medical coverage will continue until May 2027, while employees will be allowed to retain their company-issued laptops.

Eligible employees will also receive payouts linked to the 20 November, 2026 vesting of legacy-restricted stock unit cash awards. The support measures further include resume assistance, career coaching, job placement resources and immigration-related assistance for employees on US visas.

The restructuring reflects a wider shift among technology companies towards leaner organisational structures, with businesses reassessing team sizes, responsibilities and the skills required to develop products in an increasingly AI-enabled environment. For Squarespace employees, the changes mean a substantial workforce reduction even as the company prepares to reorganise around smaller, more streamlined teams.
