A WhatsApp exchange between a young employee and his manager is sparking widespread discussion about workplace culture, boundaries, and empathy. The conversation, now viral on X, showcases a Gen Z worker firmly pushing back against a manager who appeared to prioritise work over a family tragedy.
The chat began when the employee informed his manager that his uncle had passed away and he needed the day to support his family. Instead of offering condolences, the manager reminded him about a client meeting scheduled for the day and insisted he attend before taking leave. The employee tried to explain that his uncle played a pivotal role in his upbringing and it was impossible for him to participate in a meeting while grieving.
As the discussion escalated, the manager continued pressing for attendance, prompting the employee to highlight his past commitment—late nights, weekend hours and consistent effort. He emphasised that taking a single day to mourn was reasonable and necessary. The manager responded by telling the employee that he was “overreacting” and warning him about consequences.
The employee eventually pushed back more firmly, stating that empathy and basic decency were minimum expectations in any workplace. This only further agitated the manager, who ended the conversation by threatening HR action, marking the day as leave without pay and demanding a death certificate to process future leave.
The viral post has triggered strong reactions online. Many social-media users have praised the employee for standing up against what they view as an insensitive and authoritarian approach to management. Several argued that managers who prioritise client meetings over personal emergencies lack emotional maturity. Others pointed out that clients are often understanding, and it is rigid managerial attitudes that create unnecessary pressure.
Not everyone sided with the employee, however. A few commenters felt he could have handled the situation differently and avoided escalating the exchange.
The incident has renewed conversations around empathy in leadership, mental well-being, and how Gen Z is reshaping expectations for healthier and more humane workplaces.

That must have been a fake chat. Gen Z don’t call anyone ‘Sir’.
Oh ya really which world u are in day dreams right they are genz who call people sir and maam
Seems totally scripted. And discussing of today’s client at 11.20 PM in the night. Lol. Looks like gen z is desperate to go viral
Actually working your a*s off and can’t even have time for your family is such a dumb thing to do … Children born in 90s and late 80s are promoting this but this should be stop … If a persoon is earning for family let them spend time with them ….companies hiring one person and give them work of two for much profit are a*sh*le… And people are naive … Actual reason of half of unemployment are these companies…
Very nicely reacted by the employee.
Manager means manage.. he could have managed without genz but manager defeated the purpose of his name. So sad.. i am taking this as a story and reacting accordingly. I neither beleive this is true not its fake…
Nicely spaced texts 1 minute apart. Sure. That happened.
It’s clear he’s an Indian manager… he himself works as slave and ends up putting the same on others.
I actually worked for a boss who forced someone to come back in the middle of his bereavement leave for the death of HIS OWN FATHER. 2 week, HR sanctioned leave, and she called him back.
I left my job, for my Father emergency admitted to Hospital for Heart attack. And Company owner just could not take this in right way. Hello send other employees to check to hospital. But he could not come to meet me, going by the same road on one day for One client meeting. That’s really crazy. And he ended up shutting his company within 1.5yrs. As I left the Company.
Indian Managers are acting like they are CEO of the company.
It can’t be the words of any CEO this is basic human understanding and if someone is lacking it , I believe he or she should be admitted into mental hospital .
If this chat sounds reality then yes put her or him outside earth . Respectively in PLUTO
I don’t know about this but I have faced the same situation in my previous company.
Now a days clients from onshore are understanding the employees concern than the people who are acting as a bridge between in India and client.
It is scripted or not, That’s not a matter. Matter is – it is true. In india work culture discusting, toxic, and hostile work culture. There are very few companies that have good, supportive and beautifull and helping environment
Most of the Indian managers are not capable enough to handle a situation and depend on subordinates to resolve or discuss. This dependency along with an employer attitude that employee means one owns him is the main reason.
Scripted. Stage managed. I don’t believe it.
If such chats are real then name of such managers and companies should be revealed so people could avoid such companies if they receive any offers
