Viral Reddit post sparks debate on workplace ergonomics after chair request was denied

The situation became more frustrating for the employee after a recent all-hands meeting where the founder introduced a new luxury chair

A workplace complaint shared on Reddit has ignited a discussion online about employee wellbeing and the gap between executive perks and everyday workplace needs.

The post, shared on the platform’s r/AntiWork forum, described how an employee seeking basic ergonomic support for back pain was reportedly denied assistance by HR. At the same time, the company’s founder showcased a high-end office chair costing nearly Rs 2.7 lakh during a company-wide meeting.

According to the employee, they have been working in a desk-based role at the firm since 2019, typically spending eight to ten hours a day seated. Over time, persistent lower back pain prompted them to request an ergonomic chair through HR. However, the request was reportedly declined on the grounds that such upgrades were not part of the company’s budget.

The situation became more frustrating for the employee after a recent all-hands meeting where the founder introduced a new luxury chair. While the employee acknowledged that executives are free to spend their personal money as they choose, the contrast raised questions about the company’s priorities when it comes to employee health and comfort.

The post also highlighted the absence of a clear reimbursement policy for health-related workplace equipment. When the employee asked HR what kind of ergonomic support might be reimbursable, the response reportedly lacked clarity and suggested approvals would depend on circumstances or a potential medical recommendation.

Faced with continued discomfort, the employee said they began considering purchasing their own chair. However, the idea of paying out of pocket for equipment required to perform a full-time job left them frustrated.

The story quickly drew attention online, prompting widespread reactions from other users. Many commenters emphasised the importance of prioritising health over workplace cost-cutting and argued that employers should provide basic ergonomic support for employees who spend long hours at desks.

This story highlights an important workplace issue: ergonomic support should not be treated as a luxury perk when it directly affects employee wellbeing and daily performance. A suitable chair can be a small cost compared with the productivity loss and discomfort caused by poor seating over months. The contrast between executive comfort and basic employee needs also makes the HR angle especially relevant. Do you think companies should handle ergonomic chair requests as a health and safety matter rather than a discretionary benefit?
