Walmart restructuring AI and technology teams; 1,000 roles to be affected

The move is part of a broader modernisation strategy being driven under CEO John Furner as competition in global retail intensifies

Walmart is reportedly planning a major restructuring of its technology and AI operations that could affect nearly 1,000 corporate employees through role cuts and relocations.

According to reports, the company is reorganising parts of its global technology and AI product divisions as it pushes deeper into automation, digital infrastructure, and AI-led retail operations. The move is part of a broader modernisation strategy being driven under CEO John Furner as competition in global retail intensifies.

The restructuring reflects Walmart’s growing focus on integrating artificial intelligence more directly into core business functions rather than operating AI initiatives separately from larger technology teams.

The retailer has been steadily increasing investments across several technology areas, including AI-powered operations, supply-chain automation, data analytics, digital commerce systems, and platform development. The latest changes suggest the company now wants tighter coordination between these functions as digital transformation becomes central to business strategy.

While Walmart has not publicly detailed which teams will be impacted, reports indicate the scale of the reorganisation is significant and signals a wider operational shift inside the company.

The development comes as technology increasingly shapes competition in the retail industry. Large retailers are under pressure to improve fulfilment speed, inventory management, pricing efficiency, customer engagement, and online shopping experiences.

Walmart’s restructuring also reflects a broader workplace trend emerging across industries as AI adoption begins reshaping corporate structures. Companies are increasingly reviewing workforce models, productivity systems, reporting structures, and operational overlap as automation moves from experimentation into day-to-day business operations.

The consolidation of Walmart’s AI and technology teams signals how deeply AI is beginning to influence organisational design, especially across corporate and white-collar functions.
