Starbucks is set to lay off more than 200 employees as part of the completion of a previously announced corporate reorganisation. The coffee chain filed a notice, detailing the planned job cuts. The layoffs are expected to affect employees across its corporate operations, with coffeehouse and design teams likely to account for most of the affected roles.
The company has clarified that the cuts do not represent a fresh restructuring exercise. Instead, they are the final workforce reductions linked to the reorganisation announced earlier.
Some of the employees affected by the move had reportedly been given the option of retaining their jobs by relocating to Nashville, Tennessee. The city is home to Starbucks’ Southeast corporate office. Those who chose not to move are among the workers expected to be impacted by the layoffs.
The latest cuts come as Starbucks continues to reshape its corporate workforce and operations. The company has been consolidating certain functions and adjusting its organisational structure as part of broader efforts to streamline operations.
The decision also highlights the impact that corporate relocations can have on employees when companies centralise teams in specific locations. While relocation can allow businesses to bring functions together, employees who are unable or unwilling to move may ultimately face redundancy.
Starbucks has maintained that the current layoffs should be viewed as the conclusion of its existing reorganisation rather than the beginning of another round of restructuring.
The company’s coffeehouse and design functions are expected to bear the largest share of the job losses. The move will reduce headcount in these teams as Starbucks completes the changes outlined under its earlier restructuring plan.
