India hosted the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting in Hyderabad on 13 and 14 July, bringing together labour ministers and senior officials from member countries to discuss workforce development, labour market reforms and strategies for the future of work.
Held under India’s BRICS *Chairship* the two-day meeting focused on strengthening cooperation in areas including skills development, social protection, digital labour platforms and inclusive employment. The discussions centred on building labour policies that can respond to technological advancements, demographic changes and evolving workplace dynamics.
Delegates exchanged views on strengthening workforce readiness through reskilling, upskilling and lifelong learning. They also discussed ways to improve labour governance, expand social-security coverage and enhance employment opportunities in an increasingly digital economy.
Another key area of discussion was improving labour-market resilience by sharing best practices on worker welfare, employment generation and policies that support inclusive economic growth.
The meeting concluded with participating countries reaffirming their commitment to closer collaboration on labour and employment issues, recognising the need for coordinated efforts to build resilient and future-ready workforces.
The discussions underscore the growing emphasis on continuous learning, workforce adaptability and skills-based employment strategies as governments and organisations prepare for the changing nature of work.
