Canva is restructuring and how! This round of workforce restructuring is expected to affect 1,271 employees, or about 22 per cent of its global workforce. The changes include layoffs, role transitions and relocation to key company hubs.
The Sydney-based design and publishing platform is undertaking the overhaul after experiencing a slowdown in growth for the first time in its 13-year history.
The move reflects broader changes taking place across the software industry, where artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how products are developed, used and delivered.
As AI tools become more capable, users are increasingly able to create content without relying on specialised software. At the same time, companies are using
AI to improve productivity and operate with leaner teams. Against this backdrop, Canva believes incremental adjustments will not be enough to keep pace with market changes and customer expectations.
The restructuring is one of the most significant organisational changes the company has undertaken since its founding. In addition to workforce reductions,
Canva is redesigning how teams work and collaborate.
Sydney will become the primary hub for a larger share of Canva’s product teams. The company is also placing greater emphasis on in-person collaboration. From
January, most hybrid employees will be expected to work from the office two to three days a week.
The development highlights how AI is influencing not only job design but also workforce structures, workplace policies and location strategies. The changes demonstrate that organisations are increasingly reviewing headcount, team models and ways of working as they respond to technological disruption and slower business growth.
In recent times, organisations across the technology sector have been trying to adapt to the AI era, and in the process witnessing a reshaping of both business operations and workforce planning.
